Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congresswoman Laura Richardson announced the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities will award $438,296 in funding to Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU). CDU is receiving this grant through The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD). NIMHD leads scientific research to improve minority health and eliminate health disparities.

"This grant is wonderful news for the people of Watts, Willowbrook and neighboring communities, areas which have an immediate need for improved health facilities and the professionals to staff them," Congresswoman Laura Richardson said.

The funds awarded to Charles Drew University will be used to mentor postdoctoral professionals training to reduce health disparities by working to develop community-partnered solutions.

"The skilled professionals that this grant will help to create will be entering the job market at a critically important time, as millions more Americans are able to afford health insurance thanks to the Affordable Care Act that I was proud to co-sponsor and support," Congresswoman Richardson added. "The health of the people of the 37th Congressional District will only get better as the combination of affordable health insurance and skilled practitioners makes quality, local health care the new norm rather than the exception."
