Senate Approves Six-Month Continuing Resolution, Preventing Government Shutdown

On September 22, 2012, the U.S. Senate approved H.J.Res. 117, the Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund the federal government until March 27, 2013. The temporary funding bill continues operations for federal agencies, programs and services. The measure was passed in the US House on Sept. 14, 2012 and will now be sent to the President.

The bill makes minimal changes to fiscal year (FY) 2012 spending levels. Senator Hutchison supported its passage.

"This continuing resolution will provide critical funding for government programs that adheres to the Fiscal Year 2013 spending levels in the Budget Control Act. It is important for the American taxpayer and for the stability of our national economy, to pass this legislation to avoid a government shutdown," Hutchison said. "However, these short term solutions will not solve the bigger problem. It is imperative that we pass a budget and annual appropriation bills to help restore Americans' faith in their government and put our financial house back in order."
