Blackburn Statement on House Passage of the Stop the War on Coal Act

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Marsha Blackburn (TN-7) today issued the following statement in support of the Stop the War on Coal Act.

"There is a war being waged on energy and on coal in this country, but it's not being waged from abroad, it's coming from our own government. The legislation approved by the House today will protect U.S. jobs and put an end to the EPA's excessive regulations that are killing our coal industry and the livelihoods of hard-working miners and their families.

"The United States produces 35 percent of the world's coal, which is more than any other country in the entire world. Our country has more than 250 billion tons of recoverable coal, which is enough to last us for more than 250 years. Last year alone coal was responsible for more than 42 percent of all electricity generated in the U.S.

"Shutting down the coal industry may sound like a great idea at Sierra Club meetings, but it just doesn't make any sense. It's time to bring an end to the war on coal and put the focus back on finding real solutions for American energy independence."
