Rockefeller Calls on Patriot Coal to Protect Worker and Retiree Health Care & Pension Benefits

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Senator Jay Rockefeller today announced that he sent a letter to Patriot Coal Corporation Chairman and CEO Irl F. Engelhardt strongly urging the company to keep its commitment to provide health care, pension, and other benefits for its workers and retirees as it goes through its bankruptcy reorganization.

As part of the letter, Rockefeller says, "Any efforts to strip these coal miners of their earned benefits through the bankruptcy process would be severely unjust."

Rockefeller also sent a letter to United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) President Cecil E. Roberts expressing his support for UMWA miners and efforts to protect the benefits they have earned. Rockefeller has long fought to protect the jobs, health, safety, and benefits of coal miners.
