Warren Renews Call for Disaster Declaration for Massachusetts Fishermen

Press Release

Date: Sept. 12, 2012

U.S. Senate candidate and consumer advocate Elizabeth today renewed her call for the Federal Government to issue a disaster declaration for New England's fishermen, who are threatened by massive reductions in catch limits for regional groundfish stocks next year.

"It's time for the Federal Government to take action and support our fishermen here in New England," said Warren. "Massachusetts fishermen have been waiting long enough. The fishing industry is a critical part of our economy, and we need a disaster declaration now to help protect the livelihood of our local fishermen and their communities."

Last month, the New England Fishery Management Council reported that fishing quotas for New England groundfish stocks are likely to be drastically reduced in 2013. The Department of Commerce has not yet responded to the Governor's request for a disaster declaration from last year, despite requests from New England's governors and Congressional delegations.
