Congressman Richard E. Neal Leads Fight Against Draconian Ryan Budget

Press Release

Location: Springfield, MA

With Mitt Romney vetting potential vice presidential candidates, including Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan, Congressman Richard E. Neal released the following statement, along with a video, challenging Republican positions.

"I refuse to stand by as Republicans promote their policies as fiscally responsible," said Neal. "In reality, the Ryan budget proposes draconian cuts that would destroy programs the Democratic Party established on behalf of the working man and the working woman. Now is not the time to slash Medicare; now is not the time to ration health care to individual states; now is not the time to give more tax breaks to the wealthy as the middle class struggles; now is not the time to increase defense spending at the cost of America's infrastructure. I will continue to challenge any Republican who claims we can right our economy on the backs of working Americans."

Earlier this summer, Ryan took part in a Romney campaign retreat in Utah where attendees needed to donate a minimum of $50,000 or raise $250,000. In contrast, Neal has been traveling the new First Congressional District meeting with voters to discuss the importance of maintaining programs Ryan is attempting to cut. Citing Neal's commitment to upholding Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, the National Committee to Preserve and Protect Social Security and Medicare endorsed Neal.

As a former Mayor, Neal has a keen understanding of budgets and how reliant communities are on the federal government. During conversations with local officials, Neal constantly hears about the concern of cities and towns if Ryan's proposals become reality.

In the following video, Neal says to Ryan, "I don't think we ought to be governed by theology here. I think we should be governed by what works."
