With ratification of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty in December 2010, U.S. nuclear arms will be reduced. However, the United States and Russia will still retain large Cold War sized nuclear arsenals -- about 90- 95% of some 21,000 nuclear weapons worldwide.

The U.S. nuclear arsenal is wasteful and far too large for deterring a nuclear attack on this country. We need to take new steps, beyond the New START Treaty, to reduce the U.S. nuclear arsenal. I support negotiations for deeper cuts in nuclear weapons arsenals. Also, because many countries harbor vulnerable nuclear materials that could be fashioned into nuclear weapons or used in radiological bombs, there is a danger of nuclear weapons or materials falling into the hands of terrorists or rogue states. The president has committed to the goal of securing vulnerable nuclear materials worldwide within four years. I support that goal.
