Funding Libya and Egypt

Statement

Date: Sept. 13, 2012
Issues: Foreign Aid

Today, the House passed a continuing resolution to prevent a government shutdown with overwhelming support. Like many of you, I had concerns that this bill contained funding for Libya and Egypt, which I strongly oppose after the recent anti-American acts of violence. I believe that taxpayer-funded aid is a privilege that must must be earned - and these 2 nations have not earned our assistance at this time. I assure you that this bill contains no funding for Libya and while it does contain funding for Egypt, Congress has the authority to block the release of all aid - a charge I am leading. I am pleased to let you know that as of Septemebr 13th, Congress has already put a hold on $18.3 million in aid to Egypt, and with my strong support will fight to block any efforts to release more funding in the near future.
