Issue Position

John Tierney has been endorsed for re-election by the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest LGBT civil rights organization. John is also honored to have the support of the Bay State Stonewall Democrats, along with his friend and colleague Congressman Barney Frank.

Congressman John Tierney has been a strong supporter of equality for all Americans and a consistent voice for advancing LGBT rights. John Tierney supported the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell so that gay and lesbian Americans can serve openly in the United States military. He also voted for the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Bill in Congress, which expanded the federal hate crimes act to include crimes motivated by a victim's sexual orientation, gender identity, perceived gender or disability.

John is working to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which currently denies 1,138 federal benefits, rights and privileges to legally wed gay and lesbian couples in Massachusetts. John Tierney is proud to stand with President Obama in his support of marriage equality and has repeatedly fought against constitutional amendments to ban same-sex marriage at the federal level.
The Republican majority in Congress has stopped legislation to advance equality and has actively sought to turn back the clock on the rights of LGBT Americans. Congressman Tierney has opposed attempts by right-wing Republicans to put up roadblocks for equality.

John Tierney believes that discrimination in the workplace is wrong and will continue to push for passage of an inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) to prohibit workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. John will keep fighting for equality until LGBT Americans can live, love and work safely and openly in our society.
