September 11, 2012

The Honorable Rick Scott
Governor
The Capitol
400 S. Monroe St.
Tallahassee, FL 3299

Dear Governor Scott:

We write in order to ask that you make use of all the resources at your disposal to provide Palm Beach County with the help it needs to repair the damages resulting from flooding caused by Tropical Storm Isaac. Preliminary estimates of the damages to the County are as high as $71 million. When all the assessments are completed, the total amount of damage may be considerably greater.

Infrastructure that County residents use every day was damaged, from roads, bridges, and government buildings, to privately owned property, even homes. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Palm Beach County schools alone have suffered over $1 million in damages due to the devastating flooding. This is money that these schools can ill afford to spare from their already tight budgets. We hope you will agree that in the aftermath of a natural disaster such as this both the state and federal government should make use of all of their resources needed to help its suffering citizens.

We know that you and the Florida Division of Emergency Management will do everything within your power to help Palm Beach County residents rebuild their communities. Thank you for your consideration of our request. Please keep us informed on this matter and contact our offices with any questions or further information.

Sincerely,

Alcee L. Hastings
Member of Congress

Bill Nelson
U.S. Senator

Ted Deutch
Member of Congress

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Democratic Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
