Jobs and Economic Recovery

Statement

For the 42nd consecutive month, the United States has struggled with an unemployment rate over 8 percent. For Hoosiers, that's 42 months too long. The current Administration has spent the last three years forcing failed economic policies and unnecessary regulations on small business. This "big government" philosophy has prevented the kind of job creating turnaround necessary to get those who are unemployed or under employed back to work.

As hardworking families and small businesses continue to struggle in this anemic economy, they are looking for serious solutions for our country's serious problems, not more political rhetoric. In my run for Congress two years ago, I released my "Jobs and Economic Recovery Plan" and launched my "Made IN Indiana" tour to address our nation's growing economic challenges.

Uncertainty and increased government regulation have become the new normal under President Obama. Confidence is at an all-time low as businesses are struggling to operate in the current environment. Record deficits, out of control spending, a near-government takeover of health care, increased regulation, and the threat of higher taxes are all factors leading to fear within the business community. Any serious plan must address these fundamental failures.

On Monday, August 6th, I recognized the two year anniversary of my "Made IN Indiana" jobs tour by releasing an update to my "Jobs and Economic Recovery Plan." Over the next few months, I will continue to visit with businesses across Indiana's 8th District to hear their stories.

In three short weeks, I have made over 50 stops in 18 counties across the district listening to local businesses, community leaders, and families on how to move this country forward and get people back to work. I understand good ideas don't come from Washington, D.C., but from fellow Hoosiers.

One message has been clear: the federal government, under the current Administration, is the largest impediment to economic growth and job creation.

My jobs plan focuses on addressing this underlying concern. We must foster American ingenuity and innovation by eliminating uncertainty for small businesses, helping those out of work seek the education and training they'll need, and reforming the president's failed policies that are leading our country down the wrong path. As a member of the U.S. House, I have voted for more than 30 jobs bills that would accomplish these goals. Unfortunately, these bills languish in the Harry Reid controlled Senate.

As the son of a coal miner from an agriculture community of 1,400 people, I was given every opportunity to live out the American Dream. As your Congressman, I will continue working to ensure all Americans have the same opportunities that I did.

As a father, I can honestly say that I have serious concerns about our children's future. If we continue down this path, I dare to say that their generation will not be better off than ours, a first in our nation since the Great Depression. We must stand up to the failed policies of this Administration and the philosophy of tax and spend liberalism.

Free market ideas and private sector beliefs are the founding principles of the United States economy -- the largest economy in the world.

Mr. President, we did build it.

Dr. Larry Bucshon
