Issues: Education

Educating our children should be our greatest domestic investment. Through a strong education system, our nation is assured of a robust economy, strong defense and an enduring democracy.

I believe primary and secondary education policy-making is a state and local issue, and the federal government's role should be to assist in filling economic gaps and other inequalities. We must work with our parents, teachers, administrators and community leaders to improve education.

Simply blaming teachers for our educational challenges accomplishes nothing. Teachers are overwhelmingly caring professionals who place our children's education as their top priority. We need to work with our teachers, not against them, to make sure they have the resources they need.

Regarding higher education, the major issue is rising tuition costs. Tuition to a public university has tripled since 1980. By bringing the cost of college under control, we can ensure that students can have access to higher education.

As a member of Congress, I will work to keep student loan rates low and protect Pell grant funding. Access to higher education is imperative in ensuring that we continue to be a world leader in innovation and industry.
