Issue Position: Property Taxes

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

Recently, Governor Cuomo oversaw a negotiated property tax cap that limited the amount our property taxes could be raised without a referendum on the local budgets. That is a good start, but with property values down, unemployment at 8.6%, and the economy still failing under President Obama, we need to find ways to reduce our spending obligations and tie property taxes to real values of property, rather than an artifical floor increase. Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel voted against the current cap, instead wanting to be able to raise property taxes without restriction.
