Fitzgerald Calls on Buchanan to Withdraw Support of Akin's Redefinition of Rape Bill

Press Release

Date: Aug. 21, 2012

Today, Keith Fitzgerald, former state representative and candidate for U.S. Congress in Florida's 16th Congressional district, released the following statement in response to Congressman Akin's inflammatory and disgraceful comments that "legitimate rape" rarely causes pregnancy.

Last year, Congressman Vern Buchanan co-sponsored a bill with Congressman Akin that sought to change the definition of rape and incest and limit health care options to women who are victims of "forcible rape" only.

"Congressman Todd Akin's comments about "legitimate rape' are offensive and appalling. All rape is an act of violence against women. And all rape is forced. Period," said Keith Fitzgerald. "I call on Congressman Vern Buchanan, not only to condemn his colleague's remarks, but to withdraw his support of appalling legislation that would have narrowed the definition of rape under federal law."
