Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

Growing up in North Florida, I have a unique understanding and commitment to the environment. As a result, every major environmental law passed by the Florida Legislature in the last 28 years has had my imprint. While serving as Chairman of the Natural Resources Committee in the Florida House, I sponsored and passed the Apalachicola Bay Protection Act, Preservation 2000 (Florida Forever), and the Clean Indoor Air Act. I also brought state-wide awareness to the Apalachicola Bay three river system by holding committee hearings on the issue when I served as Chairman of the Senate Environmental Preservation and Conservation committee.

As your Congressman, I will continue his commitment to conservation. I will fight to strengthen federal environmental protections for the Everglades, and will oppose efforts to open the Everglades to drilling. I will also push for tough penalties for companies like BP, which pollute Florida's pristine beaches and coastline and cost thousands of Florida jobs.
