Senator Michael Baumgartner released a statement today regarding Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akins' remarks regarding rape and pregnancy.

"I completely disagree with Mr. Akins' ignorant remarks regarding the links between pregnancy and rape," Baumgartner said. "To belittle the trauma rape victims go through is extremely offensive, and I am horrified that he would show such little empathy."

"There is no place for these kinds of statements in politics, and it is not the place of politicians to define "legitimate rape.' It's disappointing to see so little empathy in someone who wants to represent the people of Missouri. His statements are inexcusable."

"Given the serious state of the economy and the fiscal problems facing the nation, it would be much better for everyone to call a truce on the culture wars and get back to finding the real solutions needed to balance our budget and create job growth."
