Markey Statement on FCC Action on Special Access Rules

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), senior member of the Energy and Commerce Committee and former chairman of the Communications, Technology and the Internet Subcommittee, released the following statement after the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to temporarily suspend "special access" rules and to begin data collection in support of developing permanent rules that would support more flexibility and competition in communications services.

"Today's announcement from the FCC is a welcome step in reforming special access rules that for far too long have limited flexibility and hindered competition in the communications marketplace. The outdated rules currently governing the special access market need to be reformed so the businesses, competitive carriers, wireless service providers and others who rely on it can take full advantage of robust and competitive broadband services."
