Pelosi Statement on 77th Anniversary of Social Security

Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today in recognition of the 77th anniversary of Social Security:

"With the creation of Social Security 77 years ago, our nation made a commitment to the dignity and retirement security of America's seniors. Social Security provides Americans with a guaranteed lifetime benefit that is protected against inflation, earned with a lifetime of hard work. And today, as we do every day, Democrats reaffirm our commitment to Social Security and the promise to strengthen it for future generations.

"On the other side of the aisle, Republicans continue in their relentless efforts to slash Social Security benefits and undermine our seniors' economic security. Congressman Paul Ryan has proposed privatizing Social Security and wrote the Republican budget that ends Medicare as we know it and shifts costs to seniors.

"Democrats will always stand strong for Social Security, for Medicare, and for our nation's seniors."
