Issue Position: Social Security

Issue Position

The country has made a commitment to its people to provide the livable, but not lavish, safety net of income in retirement, upon disability, or for dependent survivors upon death of income earners. It has not made a retirement system to replace people's private efforts. The Social Security system however needs tweaking to keep it actuarially-sound, because we are living longer and we have provided benefits not originally contemplated. The age for retirement should be increased as our life expectancy and normal work lives increase, and the wage cap upon which Social Security deductions occur should be raised.
