Brown-Supported Bill to Impose Tougher Sanctions on Iran, Syria, Passes Senate

Press Release

Location: Washington DC

The U.S. Senate passed legislation cosponsored by U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) to ratchet up the sanctions against the Iranian and Syrian regimes. Brown co-authored provisions of the bill providing new sanctions targeting human rights violators in Iran and Syria.

"As Iranian and Syrian regimes continue to thumb their nose at the international community, we will continue to increase sanctions on the government leaders to force them to meet their international obligations. Iran must cease its efforts to obtain nuclear weapons," Brown said. "These new sanctions increase pressure on regimes that pose a greater threat to the U.S. and our allies around the world-- including our most important ally in the Middle East, Israel. We must continue to do everything we can to isolate Iran until it ceases its weapons program."

The Iran Threat Reduction and Syria Human Rights Act authorizes new tools for the President to employ in an effort to pressure Iran into complying with international obligations. The agreement:

provides a qualitative and quantitative strengthening of the Iran Sanctions Act sanctions;

includes financial sanctions aimed at further restricting Iran's access to the international financial system;

increases the prohibitions on insurance and shipping; and

creates specified sanctions targeting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
