Perlmutter Supports Middle Class Tax Relief

Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter (CO-07) voted to support middle class tax relief which would help prevent higher taxes for more than 114 million Americans -- including 1.9 million in Colorado. However, Tea Party Republicans blocked the measure and instead rushed through their one-year tax giveaway of $62 billion to millionaires and billionaires. The Tea Party Republican plan (HR 8) will raise taxes on the hardworking people in Colorado's 7th Congressional District by an average of $1,600. The House Republicans' plan gives more tax breaks to the top 2 percent, which will be paid for by increasing taxes on 25 million American families and adding nearly $403 billion to the deficit over 10 years.

"We need to stop the partisan brinkmanship. We should be working together to strengthen our families, invest in our communities and ensure we have good, stable jobs in order to have an economy built to last," said Perlmutter. "Unfortunately, House Tea Party Republicans blocked tax relief and economic certainty for 98% of Americans. The Senate passed it, the President wants to sign it, and all the House had to do was vote yes and to give a majority of Americans and small businesses a tax break."

Perlmutter continued, "Americans can't afford this. We all agree we must extend middle class tax cuts, but the Tea Party Republican spending plan holds tax cuts for 98 percent of Americans and 97 percent of small businesses hostage to deficit-busting tax breaks for the top 2 percent."
