Today, Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) released the following statement regarding new sanctions announced by the United States Department of the Treasury:
"I applaud the Treasury Department's use of Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act (CISADA) authorities today to sanction two foreign banks that have facilitated transactions with designated Iranian financial entities. The use of this powerful provision of CISADA is long overdue, and should send a clear message to banks around the world that the time has finally come when they must choose between doing business with Iranian banks or doing business with the U.S. financial system. I hope the Obama Administration is likewise clear that any other foreign bank that now does business with these two newly-sanctioned banks -- one in China, the other in Iraq -- also will be cut off from the United States economy. I also hope that the European Union will act promptly to ensure that SWIFT prevents these two banks from using its services."
