Issue Position: Legislative Accomplishments

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

Over my last term, I have worked hard to help our families prosper by:

Building our economy and creating jobs;

I added a clause into the energy policy that promotes jobs for Alaskans.
I worked on and helped pass energy legislation (SB 220) that will spur jobs and invest $300 million into energy sectors and renewable energy sources.
Promoted resource development projects including extension of railroad to Pt. MacKenzie, roads to mines, hydro projects and sustainable alternative energy.
Reduced cruise ship head tax to entice passengers to Alaska during this period of economic downturn.
Reducing high energy costs so our families and businesses can flourish;

Together with other Legislators, I've helped stabilize energy supply for the Anchorage area (HB 280).
Fought to keep Enstar from charging its accounting mistake to consumers.
Expedited the in-state gas line team, to bring supply to Southcentral (HB 369). In addition to heating homes, this potential line will create thousands of jobs, help develop new industries and provide new revenues for our state.
I also co-sponsored legislation (HJR 25) allowing hydro-electric developments to access new grant sources and come on-line quicker.
Creating education opportunities;

I worked across party lines to improve early education, career readiness and college scholarships. (HB 69 & SB 221).
Appointed to Legislative Task Force on Higher Education Funding, to find ways to make education more affordable.
Helped strengthen the State Training and Employment Program (STEP). This much-needed program increases training opportunities for Alaskans affected by downturns in the economy or by technological changes in the workplace.
Co-sponsored (HB 137) to ease the transition for children of military personnel as they move from one school to another.
Helped create the University of Alaska boosters caucus, to strengthen opportunities to grow our own for our state's future.
Keeping spending under control;

Voted against the budget because it was too big.
Kept local budget items geared towards fixing streets and other ways to both improve our area and put Alaskans to work.
Helped focus budget on partnerships to reduce government spending (SERVE Alaska).
Fully paid back our state's savings account (first time in 19 years) making it the biggest in the nation.
Forward funded education to provide stability to our schools and our property taxes.
Promoting neighborhood safety and better quality of life;

Held neighborhood and community forums to learn what improvements are needed in the district.
Established a "cop on the block" program, allowing for property tax exemptions to peace officers living in high crime areas.
Upgrades the Anchorage Neighborhood Health Clinic (the only clinic taking new Medicare patients)
Replaced and repaired needed traffic devices such as street signs and broken street lights.
Made sure our streets were swept early in the spring and controlled litter by taking immediate action.
Worked to improve street drainage to prevent flooding of our streets and homes.
Installed necessary speed bumps to slow traffic to safe speeds.
Budgeted major road projects to relieve congestion.
Independence Drive upgrade and extension to O Malley Road.
Flashing lights on Lake Otis ant Abbott Loop Elementary.
Funds for school upgrades.
Extension of 100th Avenue form Minnesota to C Street.
76th Avenue upgrade with sidewalks and bike path.
Supporting our Veterans;

Established August 7th as Purple Heart Day (HB 24).
Provided help for veterans starting businesses in Alaska (HB 274).
Put revenue bonds for financing the Veterans Home Mortgage Program to a statewide public vote.
Introduced legislation to waive state park fees for resident veterans and disable veterans (HB 406).
