Education in California has to be strong to support the quality of life and vigorous economic prosperity we want in this State!
But education in California is in a state of meltdown!
*1,600 of San Diego's teachers, including many who teach within the 77th District, have received "lay off notices" this year.
*Summer school classes and remedial programs for at-risk students are being sharply reduced or simply eliminated.
*Districts throughout the State now have to borrow money simply to pay routine obligations Sacramento cannot provide.
*Practical school services in California, such as school busses, are rapidly becoming a thing of the past.
*Tuition costs at UC, our State Universities, and our Community Colleges have increased to a level that today's average graduates face more than $25,000 in student debt the moment they get their diploma.
*Recent graduates who are able to find jobs become "indentured servants" just to handle their student debt.
*Failing to resolve the crisis in public education will harm our State for decades to come. The crisis is based on a lack of funding, pure and simple. Revenue formulas to support education must be found that do not put the burden on the backs of the students and the California families the schools intend to help.
