A priority for me will be to restore the millions upon millions of dollars the Legislature has cut from our public schools. I will be a firm advocate for public education, the backbone of American democracy for at least 200 years.
My opponent has consistently voted to underfund public education while advancing self-serving legislation to divert money to private schools.
I will fight to lift Arizona out of the educational mire the Republican majority has put us in. Arizona consistently ranks near the bottom in educational achievement and support. If we want to attract quality 21st employers, we need to be near the top. It will take years of aggressive action to reverse the current trend. We must begin now.
Starve-government legislators have used the Deep Recession to put public education in a more perilous situation. In recent budget negotiations with Gov. Jan Brewer, a fellow Republican, they even refused to include her request for $100 million in funding for emergency repairs for schools. Those legislators, including my opponent, need to be replaced.
