Pelosi Remarks at Press Availability with Chinese Human Rights Activist Chen Guangcheng

Press Conference

Location: Washington, DC

Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi delivered remarks at press availability following a bipartisan meeting with human rights activist Chen Guangcheng. Below are Leader Pelosi's remarks:

"What an honor it is for all of us to be in the same room with a person of such courage and such bravery and such commitment to the rule of law and human rights as Mr. Chen. Thank you, Mr. Speaker, for making that possible for many of us here today. Thank you for bringing us here together in a bipartisan way to see how we can help shine a bright light on the situation as it affects Mr. Chen, certainly an investigation into the situation into which he was held and also now, his nephew.

"I would also thank the Obama administration and Secretary Clinton for her doing the good work necessary for Mr. Chen to leave China and come to the United States to plead his case here. A case that is about the rule of law in China, about the rights of people with disabilities, about the human rights as spelled out by the Speaker and about, again, this investigation. I don't often say this, Mr. Speaker, but I do wish to associate myself with your remarks because I think that you said very well, all that our country stands for, and our relationships with other countries, and in relationship to Mr. Chen's case. You have afforded us the honor, many of us here have been working in a bipartisan way for decades now on the subject of human rights in China, and this manifestation of it in person, Mr. Chen, calling attention to the situation there is an opportunity that we are just so privileged to have. Thank you Mr. Speaker, for making that possible.

"Thank you Mr. Chen for your courage and for joining us, giving us the opportunity to welcome you to the Capitol of the United States of America."
