Feds Give Money for Staten Island Ferry Electrical Upgrade

Press Release

Location: Staten Island, NY

A multimillion-dollar federal grant for Staten Island Ferry utilities upgrades was announced Monday.

The $2.4 million U.S. Department of Transportation grant, from the Ferry Boat Discretionary Program, is for maintenance facility pier utilities upgrades at the St. George and Whitehall terminals.

"This funding is essential to the maintenance of the Staten Island Ferry and to improve the quality of public transportation available to those who commute between Staten Island and Manhattan," said Rep. Michael Grimm, who advocated for the grant monies and announced receipt of the award.

Last summer, Grimm (R-Staten Island/Brooklyn) called on House Transportation and Infrastructure chairman Rep. John Mica (R-Fla.) to maintain the federal ferry program, saying it is a "critical part of the U.S. transportation system."
