Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

For a decade I've worked at California's largest nonprofit network of community clinics and senior care programs, advocating for expanded access and better healthcare for all Californians.

With implementation of national healthcare reforms on the horizon, our community needs elected officials with both a firm command of healthcare issues and the changing landscape and the conviction to put patients and everyday Californians first.

Expanding access to quality and affordable healthcare has been my passion and the focus of my professional career. It will be my focus in Sacramento.

My healthcare reform agenda includes:

Expanded Access
California has more than 7 million uninsured residents. I will fight to implement federal healthcare reforms in California so everyone has expanded access to quality, affordable health coverage through new health insurance exchanges and the expansion of Medi-Cal.

Improved Quality
All Californians deserve access to quality care. I will support initiatives to track and improve quality of care, invest in better care coordination, and ensure that all patients have access to the same quality system. Doing so will better manage chronic conditions and prevent advancement to more serious, debilitating, and costly forms of care.

Workforce Development
We must increase the pipeline for all types of healthcare workers. More slots for California medical schools and internships can improve the number of physicians that work in our most under-served communities. We can also improve the system by increasing access to career-technical training in high school, and pathways for nursing and other related healthcare fields in college. The state must be invested in building our workforce and providing incentives for those new workers to serve our diverse communities.
