Tim Kaine Calls on Congress to Pass Disclose Act

Location: Richmond, VA

Following the U.S. Senate's failure to advance the Democracy Is Strengthened by Casting Light On Spending in Elections Act (DISCLOSE Act), Tim Kaine released the following statement:

"Our current political system that allows millions in secret money to flood airwaves with false, negative advertising is corrosive and a hindrance to an independent electoral process. Virginians deserve better. The DISCLOSE Act would bring much needed transparency to campaign finance rules that allow for the concealment of special interests and protect the identity of a small group of influential donors at the expense of voters. Unfortunately, Washington has proven unable to take this necessary step to improve disclosure in political spending.

"I have twice attempted to strike a deal with my opponent to limit the impact of secret money in this race. In December, I extended an offer to George Allen to reach an agreement preventing outside groups from spending millions in the Virginia Senate race, but he refused. Then, I asked George Allen to agree to at least require these groups to disclose their donors in order to keep with the tradition of transparency in Virginia elections. Again, George Allen refused. We cannot continue to allow the influence of special interests to be shrouded in secrecy and protected from scrutiny. I urge Congress to reconsider this important piece of legislation to bring more transparency to campaigns in Virginia and across the country."
