In the State Senate, Maggie backed some bills that provided a limited and highly regulated expansion of gambling because she believed that the benefits of allowing gambling in those circumstances outweighed the harms. Maggie continues to be open to the possibility that bringing one or possibly two well regulated, high-end casinos to the Granite state could help our state create jobs, capture revenue that would otherwise be spent in other states, and therefore help us fund education and other essential state services that are currently not being funded adequately. But any decision on expanded gambling must consider other factors as well--first, the impact that the siting and operation of a casino will have on the host community as well as abutting communities; our ability to treat the potential social impacts expanded gambling could have on some of our citizens; and of course the impact that casino approvals in Massachusetts will have on the New England market.
