Chairman Price Praises Bipartisan Passage of "Sequestration Transparency Act of 2012"

Location: Washington, DC

House Republican Policy Committee Chairman Tom Price, M.D. (R-GA) issued the following statement after the bipartisan passage of H.R. 5872, the Sequestration Transparency Act of 2012. The legislation would require the president to submit to Congress a detailed report on how his administration plans to implement the sequestration spending cuts set to begin in 2013.

"The U.S. House of Representatives has voted overwhelmingly in support of transparency from the Obama Administration regarding sequestration. President Obama promised his would be the "most transparent' administration in history. Sadly, that has not been the case. We now call on the Obama Administration to provide all Americans, especially our brave men and women in uniform, where they would make cuts to our national defense.

"While transparency is vital to an accountable government, House Republicans are focused primarily on avoiding the devastating impact even more defense cuts, included in the upcoming sequestration, will have on our armed forces, our veterans, our economy and our national security. Although national security makes up only 19 percent of our federal budget, defense would be forced to bear the burden of nearly half of all funding cuts under the current law. This is in addition to nearly $500 billion in current reductions already put in place to, decreasing our defense spending.

"We live in an increasingly dangerous world. We fail to recognize it at our own peril. More defense spending reductions in this manner would dramatically decrease the size of our military, hinder our competitiveness, jeopardize hundreds of thousands of jobs and compromise America's posture as a global superpower -- threatening our very security.

"One of the few constitutionally-mandated roles of government is to "provide for the common defense'. We have a responsibility to do so."
