[Judiciary Committee Chairman Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) issued the following comment Monday after President Barack Obama signed the Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act into law. The measure includes several provisions championed by Senator Leahy, including one to ensure public access to information about potential health and safety dangers under the Freedom of Information Act, and another to increase penalties for trafficking counterfeit drugs.]
"The Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act puts consumers' needs first. From increasing penalties for the trafficking of counterfeit drugs to ensuring the public's ability to access health and safety information about prescription drugs, this law is one example of what Democrats and Republicans can do when we work together.
"I am also glad that Democrats and Republicans were able to join together to incorporate bipartisan provisions the Judiciary Committee passed last year to make progress in combating the emerging threat of synthetic drugs."
