Joe opposes offshore oil drilling for Florida. A McClatchy article from 3 September 2008 quotes Joe as being opposed to offshore oil drilling because it doesn't solve our dependence on foreign oil. Joe has raised concerns over potential environmental and economic dangers of offshore drilling, and personally delivered a petition for then-Governor Charlie Crist to halt oil drilling off the shores of our state.
Leadership on alternative energy. Joe, a former Energy Department official, has shown strong leadership on providing Florida's families with alternative sources of energy that will create jobs here in South Florida and make our country less dependent on foreign oil. At the Energy Department, Joe led the effort to fund and secure new energy sources from the wind and sun power that won't damage the grounds we extract them from.
Republican opponent David Rivera is a staunch supporter of offshore oil drilling. On 27 April 2009, David Rivera, then a state represenative, voted to lift Florida's 19-year-old ban on offshore drilling in state waters (Regular Session 2009, HB 1219). As The Sun Sentinel reported, the bill would have allowed oil companies such as BP to drill within state waters, as close as three miles, within viewing distance, from Florida beaches.
