Issues: Taxes

Dear Friends,

Last week, the Supreme Court of the United States made its long-awaited decision regarding the President's health care law. As I'm sure you are aware, the Court upheld the individual mandate included in the law. Now, all Americans are required to either obtain health insurance or pay a tax.

Regarding the individual mandate, the Chief Justices wrote, "Under the mandate, if an individual does not maintain health insurance, the only consequence is that he must make an additional payment to the IRS when he pays his taxes."

I am disappointed with the Court's ruling. I am concerned by the legislation's $1.76 trillion price tag. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office reported that this law will add to our deficit. The impact this will have on our economy is considerable. Additionally, health care costs continue to rise as the law is implemented.

Lastly, I want to wish all of you a safe and happy Fourth of July and for those of you coming out to our nation's capital please be sure to check my website for touring tips.

Sincerely,

Representative Ed Royce

Internet Freedom Under U.N. Threat
In an op-ed for the Orange County Register, Rep. Royce discusses the U.N.'s attack on internet freedom: "Few technologies have been as revolutionary and valuable as the Internet. So it is no surprise that a coalition of China, Iran, Cuba, Russia and others, backed by supportive U.N. bureaucrats, just won't give up targeting it for a hostile takeover." House Ends Funds for Costly High-Speed Rail Project
The House passed, with Rep. Royce's support, an amendment that prohibits the federal government from spending transportation funds on California's high-speed rail project. Californians were told the project would cost $33 billion. But costs have tripled to $98 billion, and the State is facing a severe budget crisis.
