Rep. Maloney Statement on Passage of Transportation/Student Loan Bill

Statement

Date: June 29, 2012
Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) offered the following statement after passage of today's transportation bill:

"Just in time-- less than 48 hours before the expiration of transportation funding and student loan subsidies on July 1st, passage by Congress of an extension today is welcome news.

"It will prevent student loan interest rates from doubling, and allow reconstruction of our nation's transit infrastructure to continue--which employ millions of construction workers.

"The fact that it took over 100 days to obtain passage of even this flawed legislation is testament to the Republicans' tactics of partisan obstruction on yet another essential piece of essential legislation--and their denial of reality in refusing to raise the gas tax, which was last raised in 1993, even as transportation project costs have increased over the last twenty years."
