For years, bad policies and out-of-control federal spending advanced by both political parties have contributed to an irresponsible buildup of federal debt. This excessive debt now threatens the economic recovery and poses a fundamental challenge to the American way.

Dr. Benishek sought elected office for the first time in his life because he grew tired of Washington politicians mortgaging his children and grandchildren's future. With a federal debt approaching $16 trillion, Congress can no longer ignore this problem. Dr. Benishek believes it is imperative that Congress begins reducing federal spending and erasing the staggering national
debt.

"It is unsustainable for Washington to borrow 40 cents of every dollar it spends. This fiscal policy is the primary factor currently weighing down the economy. Congress must stop running up trillion dollar deficits and set realistic spending priorities to ensure the prosperity of America's children." -- Dr. Dan Benishek

Dr. Benishek fears this unsustainable level of debt could seriously threaten economic recovery, affect seniors and low-income Americans the hardest, and leave all Americans with a diminished future. This is why Dr. Benishek has supported measures to reduce federal spending, erase the annual deficits, and provide a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution. In Dr. Benishek's view, reducing federal spending and eliminating the debt is not difficult, it just requires the will to do it.

Dr. Benishek sees this looming crisis as an enormous challenge for America. He believes it represents a defining choice of whether we improve this nation's fiscal standing or we continue to strap our children with a ball and chain of endless debt.

Dr. Benishek believes if we make the needed decisions today, we can improve this country's economy, provide more certainty to our job providers, and build a stronger fiscal foundation for America.
