Issue Position: Social Services

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

I have worked diligently to ensure that social services in Portage County are available to help as many residents as needed. When psychiatric services were cut I was a vocal advocate of retaining as many of these services as we possibly could. When our child abuse caseworkers were overloaded with cases, I supported bringing in extra caseworkers to make sure needs would be met. When meal services for elderly and disabled residents were cut, I found money in the County budget to continue this important service - and I did so without raising taxes. As Chair of the Portage County Housing Authority I strove to continue our goal of assisting residents who are in need of housing.

Giving the economic environment, now is not the time to cut or under-fund programs such as Badger Care and Badger Care Plus. Families should not be forced to sell their homes or declare bankruptcy because of medical bills. Individuals should be able to have access to preventative care so minor ailments do not escalate into a major medical crisis that could have life-long repercussions.
