Crime Subcommittee Agrees to Scott Request to Hold Hearing on Income Tax Preparation Scams

Today, the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security on the House Judiciary Committee, announced that it will hold a hearing on Identity Theft and Income Tax Preparation Fraud on Thursday, June 28, 2012. This hearing is in response to a March 8, 2012 letter from Representatives Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (D-VA), Steve Cohen (D-TN), Bennie Thompson (D-MS), and Scott Rigell (R-VA) requesting the Subcommittee hold a hearing on tax preparation scams after numerous complaints about the tax preparation firm Mo Money Taxes.

"I am pleased Chairman Sensenbrenner has agreed to hold this important hearing," said Rep. Scott. "While it will not focus specifically on the firm Mo Money Taxes, this hearing is critical to Congress being able to review and improve applicable federal civil and criminal laws. The issues faced by my constituents in Richmond and Hampton Roads demonstrate that changes to the law or better enforcement of present law may be needed in order to deter and prevent these types of scams from happening in the future."
