Dr. Dan Benishek (MI-01) today called on President Barack Obama to halt federal funding for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and condemn China's "One-Child" Policy, following international outrage after a Chinese woman was forced to abort her unborn baby girl.
"China's "One-Child' Policy and government-forced abortion is appalling. President Obama should stand up, condemn this action and cut off the flow of American tax dollars that are funding China's human rights violations," said Dr. Benishek, an Iron Mountain surgeon.
An international outcry has spread since photos surfaced of a young Chinese woman, Feng Jianmei, being forced to terminate her seven-month pregnancy. According to news reports, the 22-year-old Feng was pulled from her home on June 2 and forced to undergo an abortion procedure. Feng gave birth to a dead baby girl two days later.
"I believe Northern Michiganders strongly oppose having their hard earned tax dollars being spent on China's "family planning' atrocities. Not a single cent of American tax dollars should be wasted on such a cruel disregard for human life. I am hopeful the President will recognize the dire need to speak out against these serious violations of women's rights," added Dr. Benishek.
The United Nations Population Fund, which supports family planning around the globe, operates in China and has received $145 million in funding from the American government since 2009. Under the Administration of President George W. Bush, funding to UNFPA was eliminated completely. President Barack Obama resumed American funding for the program in 2009. Dr. Benishek is one of 107 Members of Congress to cosponsor legislation (H.R. 2059) to prohibit funding to the UNFPA.
According to "All Girls Allowed," an organization founded by a Chinese dissident that raises awareness of the "One-Child" Policy, the Chinese government conducts more than 1 million forced abortions annually.
