Issue Position: Freedom of Speech and the Press

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

Thomas Jefferson believed that free speech was essential to protect the rights of the citizens from the tempting tyranny of their own government. Never before has the public had such access to information, but there are now those who believe that certain voices should be silenced. Using terms like "fairness" or "net neutrality" to limit speech or press that doesn't agree with a particular point of view is very dangerous to the type of openness and transparency essential to our republic.
