Rep. Baca's Statement on the Supreme Court Ruling on the Affordable Care Act

Congressman Joe Baca (D-Rialto) released the following statement today, after the United States Supreme Court upheld the majority of the provisions of the historic Affordable Care Act, including the individual health insurance mandate provision:

"I commend the Supreme Court for upholding the majority of provisions in the historic Affordable Care Act. Today's decision is a victory for families across America, who will benefit from lower health costs, greater access to care, and more accountability from the insurance industry. If the Supreme Court had decided to strike down this law, insurance companies would have had free rein to increase premium rates for seniors, women, children, and people with pre-existing health conditions."

"The Affordable Care Act is already paying dividends for millions of Americans in California, and all across the nation. Thanks to health care reform:

· 435,000 young adults in California have gained insurance coverage by staying on their parents' plan;

· Over 354,000 seniors in California are paying less for their prescription drugs;

· Over 6 million Medicare recipients in California have received free preventive services; and

· No child in California has been denied access to coverage because of a pre-existing health condition.

"Thanks to this historic decision, we can ensure that access to affordable, quality health care is a right for every American. Moving forward, I will continue to stand against efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act from Congressional Republicans and candidate Mitt Romney. As the rest of the provisions of health care reform are responsibly enacted, I will continue to fight to ensure the interests of the American public are best served."
