Rep. Tim Scott Statement on Supreme Court Ruling

Congressman Tim Scott (SC-01), a House freshman class leader, released the following statement following the Supreme Court's ruling this morning on the President's health care reform and tax increase package.

"Obviously, I strongly disagree with the Supreme Court's decision today. But just because the court ruled this way, it doesn't mean I will sit down and allow this bureaucratic nightmare to harm the American people. We will now roll up our sleeves, and redouble our efforts at repeal.

The President said all along the individual mandate was not a tax, but it has been shown today as even more of a wolf in sheep's clothing. We already found $500 billion in new taxes as part of Obamacare, and now that is multiplied even further. Simply put, the American people have been misled as to what the individual mandate was, and today the veil has been lifted -- it is a tax on hardworking, blue collar American families.

There are common sense, free-market ideas that can improve our nation's health care system in ways the bureaucratic soup in Washington can't even begin to accomplish, and those should be our way forward. We will work tirelessly to lower health care costs, repeal the tax known as the individual mandate and put health care decisions back in the hands of mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, and their doctors.

I hope every American takes this opportunity to stand up and voice their opposition to this monstrosity, and I will be standing right there with them. This isn't the end of our opposition; this is a new beginning."
