Levin -- Statement on President Obama's Speech

Statement

Date: June 14, 2012
Location: Washington, DC

Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Sander Levin (D-MI) made the following statement regarding President Obama's speech on the economy:

"This is indeed a make or break moment for America's middle class. Republicans in Congress want to double down on the Bush tax cuts with an additional $5 trillion in tax breaks skewed overwhelmingly to the highest earners. What's more, their tax agenda would almost certainly mean ending provisions -- including the mortgage interest deduction. the health care exclusion and the education credit -- vital to middle-income families. Deficit reduction should not stop at the doorsteps of millionaires and billionaires at a cost to everyone else. Our economy faces too critical of a crossroads to repeat the mistakes of the past.

"The President described a path to get people back to work and support the middle class. Republicans in Congress should stop betting against the economy in an effort to improve their bets on their November election prospects. They should pass measures that could create jobs now, starting next week with the Senate-passed transportation bill."
