Sen Toomey: Farm Bill Is A Missed Opportunity To Restore Fiscal Discipline

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) today released the following statement on his vote against the farm bill (S. 3240):

"I am extremely disappointed that the Senate rejected multiple opportunities to reform our $1 trillion food stamp and agriculture subsidies bill, reduce excessive spending, and begin to restore fiscal discipline in Washington. This farm bill spends 60 percent more than the 2008 legislation and even spends more than the president proposed.

"We continue to fund programs that are nothing more than crony capitalism, from sugar subsidies for a few deep-pocketed sugar producers to crop insurance subsidies for huge, wealthy farming operations. The farm bill is now a massive transfer of wealth from hardworking American taxpayers to well-connected special interests."
