U.S. Rep. Karen Bass Statement on U.S. Supreme Court Ruling Arizona SB1070 Unconstitutional

Statement

U.S. Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.) made the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court declared three of out four provisions in Arizona's SB1070 unconstitutional.

"I support the Supreme Court's decision to render many of the provisions in the Arizona v. United States case to be unconstitutional, but am extremely disappointed to learn that the dangerous and irresponsible "show me your papers' stipulation remains intact. This clause leaves an open playing field for the outright discrimination and the violation of critical civil rights based on a person's background and heritage. It is incomprehensible that a person's civil rights are still in question 48 years after the Civil Rights Act was passed.

"Today's decision is reminds us that we need to make immigration reform a top priority in our country. President Obama opened the door with his announcement last week for young immigrants who were brought to this country through no fault of their own, but that's just the beginning -- more needs to be done and quickly.

"As we move forward beyond today's decision, it is my hope that the Supreme Court will uphold their word and take a closer look at this provision in order to ensure that civil rights are protected for every person in our country"
