Quayle, Gowdy Introduce Resolution Calling for Outside Counsel to Investigate Security Leaks

Congressman Ben Quayle released the following statement after he and Congressman Trey Gowdy introduced H.Res. 695 which calls for the appointment of an outside special counsel to investigate recent leaks of classified, highly sensitive national security secrets to the news media.

"The leaking of highly-sensitive information by the Obama Administration has put our nation's security in peril, and cast doubt on our ability to execute important missions. These leaks must stop, and those responsible for them must be brought to justice. An investigation of this magnitude can only be carried out by an independent investigator.

"I thank Senator John McCain for taking action on this issue in the Senate, and Rep. Gowdy for joining with me in the House to call for an outside counsel to get to the bottom of these leaks. We must take immediate action to ensure that we have seen the last of these dangerous leaks of classified information."

Rep. Trey Gowdy had this to say about the resolution:

"On issues as important as the leaking of national security secrets the American people should have confidence in both the result and process of the investigation. An independent investigation conducted by a special counsel with the full panoply of investigative tools is necessary and appropriate."
