Issue Position: Veterans

Issue Position

With a growing number of servicemembers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, we must go to great measures to ensure our veterans receive the best care possible. That means greater oversight of the facilities, hospitals, and clinics that care for our veterans. They deserve access to the highest quality medical technology and a health care system that is responsive to their immediate and long-term needs. Their sacrifice and commitment to this nation deserves nothing less.

Additionally, some of the benefit programs for our veterans are outdated and need to be reformed. In particular, the Montgomery GI Bill is a program that has given so many of our veterans an opportunity to seek higher education. Last year, Congress passed and the President signed into law an update to that program that increases the benefits offered to our veterans and makes those benefits transferable to the servicemember's family. We must also increase the benefits for our National Guard and Reserve members. They have served honorably in the Global War on Terrorism, and they deserve benefits that reflect their service and sacrifice
