Press Release

Date: May 24, 2012
Location: Bismark, ND
Issues: Veterans

U.S. House Candidate Pam Gulleson hosted a press conference today, May 24, on veterans issues in Bismarck, North Dakota. Gulleson was joined by local veterans, and announced the creation of her Veterans Advisory Committee, in addition to her veterans' issues platform: Keeping Our Promise to Our Veterans.

"It's easy for a politician to stand in front of veterans, but Pam has stood behind us, fighting for veterans' benefits, working to get the Veterans Home built in Lisbon, and the Community-Based Outpatient Clinic in Dickinson," said Bruce Hagen, a member of Gulleson's Veterans Advisory Committee and a veteran of the Korean War. "She knows our issues firsthand because she's taken on casework for veterans across the state, and she's the only candidate in the race with state and federal legislative experience, so she knows how to get the job done."

Gulleson emphasized her commitment to veterans' issues, and outlined her priorities as a candidate for U.S. House. She also pointed out that the House budget proposed by Rep. Paul Ryan and supported by Rep. Rick Berg would cut $11 billion from veterans spending, and make across-the-board spending freezes and cuts.

"It is unacceptable to put veterans' programs on the chopping block while giving huge tax credits to the wealthiest Americans," Gulleson said. "In Washington, I will make job opportunities for veterans coming home one of my highest priorities, in addition to fighting to strengthen veterans' healthcare, support military families and ensure that veterans receive the benefits they earned while serving our country."

Gulleson laid out some of the specifics in her plan: "I will urge Congress to provide sufficient funding for research into Post-Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brian Injuries, fight efforts to increase healthcare premiums for military retirees on TRICARE, create a G.I. Bill of Rights, honor the educational priorities in the 21st century G.I. Bill, and support programs creating job opportunities for recently returned vets. I'm looking forward to meeting with my Advisory Committee to listen to them and understand better the issues that matter most to North Dakota's veterans."

In addition to Bruce, the Veterans Advisory Committee includes Bill Anderson, Josh Kramer, Doyle Schulz, Lee Kaldor, Bobbi Jo Manikowski, Preston Duke, Craig Kubik, Rick Olek, Mara Solberg, Bob Jansen, John Jorgenson, Dan Stenvold, Doug Scraper, Connie Kooren, Chris Deery, Bruce Hagen, Herbert "Doc" Wilson, Larry Christensen, George Barnes, Chris Fabel ,Bill Hejl, Gil Nelson, Leon Thiel, Louis Rose, Chuck Fleming, Bob Valeu, Scott Brand, Ed Gruchalla, Waly Eide, Ron Guggisberg, and Von Karin King and will continue to grow in the coming months.
