National Running Day a Good Day to Get Moving

Press Release

Date: June 6, 2012

U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar says that National Running Day (today) -- and every day -- is a good day to start getting fit or recommitting to an exercise program.

"I encourage all Hoosiers to start a healthy lifestyle early on, especially through community activities such as the Dick Lugar Community Run, Walk and Health & Fitness Fair held at Butler University each fall. We have added the walking event so everyone can start small and expand their routine," Lugar said.

"Youth are particularly encouraged to get 60 minutes of physical activity a day, to help create lifelong good habits. By staying active, students also perform better in the classroom."

"Additionally, the problems associated with obesity are being realized in all aspects of society including increased health care costs and the leading medical reason why young Americans fail to qualify for military service. This is preventing one-in-four applicants from serving," Lugar said.

Lugar has been an advocate of physical fitness, health and preventative medicine throughout his career in public service.

Lugar has hosted a health and fitness fair, the Dick Lugar Community Run, Walk and Health & Fitness Fair, for Indiana residents since 1979. Since then, thousands of Hoosiers have participated in health screenings and learned about healthy lifestyles by participating in 5K and 10K runs and a 5k walk as part of the Lugar Community Run, Walk.

This year's Lugar Community Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, September 15. Please visit www.lugar.senate.gov for more information.
