Rep. Steve Chabot (R-OH), Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia, spoke about the growing threat of Iran in the region, highlighting recent provocations by the Iranian regime. Rep. Chabot's comments are below.

"On May 31 several high-ranking members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) made an extremely confrontational visit to three Iranian-held Emirati islands in the Arabian Gulf: Abu Musa, and the Greater and Lesser Tunbs. The group notably included the IRGC commander, Mohammad Ali Jafari, who has been sanctioned by both the United States and the European Union for human rights abuses in Iran as well as aiding the Assad regime in its ruthless crackdown in Syria. This brazen provocation occurred nearly one month after Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran's president, visited Abu Musa, the largest of the three, in a flagrant attempt to stoke regional tensions. This is yet another reminder that the threat from Iran is not solely its nuclear weapons program, but its aggressive conduct toward its neighbors, American allies in the Gulf. Iran remains the world's foremost state sponsor of terrorism, as several recent plots against American and Israeli diplomats demonstrate."
